The shirt can be inflated by mouth (blowing into the air tube) as often as you want without having to replace the CO2 cartridge. The CO2 cartridge does need to be replaced once it's manually deployed or after 12 months if not used. Please use only Hero CO2 replacement cartridges.  Using non-Hero CO2 replacement cartridges voids all manufacturer's warranties.
